CPCNet Launches New Remote Access Solution
Offering Secure and Reliable Connection for Executives on the Go

The new SSL VPN service capitalizes advanced encryption and authentication to enable secure communication anytime, anywhere

Hong Kong – 31 January 2005 – To answer increasing demand for efficient, secure and reliable remote access solution for mobile executives, CPCNet Hong Kong Limited (CPCNet), a telecom service provider owned by CITIC Pacific (SEHK: 267), today introduces Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) Virtual Private Network (VPN), a secure clientless remote access to CPCNet’s fully managed TrueCONNECT™ Corporate Private Network via the Internet. CPCNet is one of the first telecom service providers to launch this service in Greater China.

The new service, which enhances the company’s TrueCONNECT™ REMOTE offering, is specially designed for mobile users accessing their corporate network at home or on the road using handheld devices, laptop computers or desktop PCs. Using a Web browser, SSL utilizes advanced encryption and authentication technology to protect all traffic between the TrueCONNECT™ network and remote access points.

“Our customers are increasingly demanding secure remote access service. With our SSL VPN service, we are offering them a solution that is reliable enough to allow them to remotely access their corporate network in a secure connection with minimal set-up and configuration,” said Stephen Ho, CEO of CPCNet.

SSL was originally designed to secure the HTTP protocol for better protected Web-based communication at the applications layer. Our SSL VPN deploys the technology as a clientless Web access, protecting Web-based applications as well as providing full network access through a user-defined login ID and password, which helps protect the communication channel.

“Without the need of client software being loaded into individual laptops, SSL VPN distinguishes itself from IPSec VPN, a traditional way of securing VPN tunnel which requires proprietary client software, thereby offering users the real benefits of ‘access anywhere’,” Ho said.

Cost Efficient Connectivity

“The beauty of our SSL VPN offering is that it doesn’t require users to invest in equipment, planning and manpower to design, build and maintain their own remote access gateway or Web browser. They can leverage CPCNet’s infrastructure and expertise in maintaining the service,” explained Ho.

He added that the service can be layered on existing applications without any application changes or incremental SSL VPN feature costs. And since it does not require additional proprietary user application, the service can be offered to a large number of users within the company with no incremental per-subscriber costs.

Performance and Scalability

“With IPSec/SSL Central Gateway located at CPCNet’s premises, users have the benefit of having their corporate applications hosted in a world-class data center with high bandwidth Internet connectivity. Performance is only limited by bandwidth subscribed by the customer,” said Ho.

With 24x7 monitoring and maintenance, users are guaranteed high availability service that meets pre-agreed Service Level with centralized troubleshooting for improved fault isolation and restoration.

Easy Installation and Maintenance

The central gateway can be hosted in a country where most of the customer’s mobile workers are located to improve access, or it can be deployed in multiple countries, depending on customer business requirements.

Our SSL VPN service requires minimal management and does not require reconfiguration of network resources, particularly firewalls. Mobile users using corporate laptops also benefit as they can use any available Internet connection without being blocked by intermediate firewalls.
